Picking up the fallen pieces
March 4th, 2007
I have a hard time remembering anything special about the making of the song “Falling to Pieces”. I remember being really psyched about this, I really loved the guitars in the verse and still do. I think that this song was just a product of me doodling with the guitar. This song sort of composed itself, it came out quite fluently.
The original demo had vocals only on the chorus, the melody for the verses came later. If I remember correctly, the verse melody and the lyrics were made in lectures (there’s no point in listening to the professors at school…). Sometimes that’s just how it goes, there’s no way of knowing when and where the inspiration comes. Usually new songs come to mind when I’m in a place where it is pretty much impossible to write them down or record them. Then you just have to try to hum the song or a part of the song, and hope that you will remember it long enough. Obviously I have forgotten many, many songs. But I am a firm believer, that if a song is great, you will remember it.
The backing vocals in the chorus are also something that I’m almost proud of. Nothing special about them, to me they just sound really good. This was the first song where I used two different melody lines simultaneously, a trick I am very fond of nowadays, I have used it more since then. And will continue using, that’s a promise.
This has really been a divider of opinions, some people really like this song, and others think it’s pretty much meaningless. To me this song has a special meaning, and maybe that’s why I take the criticism a bit more personally compared to the other songs. Although I have to say, that I am not the best person in the world to take criticism about my songs. But I guess it’s understandable, when you put your heart and soul into the songs, and then someone says that they suck or that there’s no feeling in the songs or something like that, it’s bound to hurt. I know that it’s just one person’s opinion, but obviously it’s much nicer to get good feedback instead of bad.
But yeah, into more positive things; the flu is almost gone, life is winning. That’s all for now, I’ll try to post soon again. ‘Till then, toodly doo.
