How - It All Went Wrong?

Howdy!

Here is a short description about the recording of our latest Internet single It All Went Wrong.

The original idea was just to test what we could do by ourselves and see if it would be possible in future to record a demo with our own gear. As the song was not originally planned to be released at all, we didn’t pay too much attention to quality when recording the stuff - it was more or less just learning and trying different things.

All the recordings were done in our rehearsal space, which is actually quite a small room with lots of stuff just lying around. So it is not an ideal space for recording anything - is it? Well, few backing vocals were recorded in my living room with an old mic from some cassette player of early 70’s. Very different sound from a modern dynamic mic you might think - and yes, you’re right! One funny detail is that some lonely drummer was taking all out of his drum set in the same basement while we recorded the vocals. Quite an optimal environment for recording vocals… right?

Some of you might be interested in the gear we used in recording. For drums we used some cheap T-bone drum mic set that was strengthened with Shure 57 and Shure 58. For vocals we used Studio Projects C1 condenser microphone. All recordings were made using Logic Express 7 software running on MacBook Pro and Focusrite Saffire PRO 26 I/O audio interface. iZotope Ozone3 was used in finalizing the song.

Recording the bass guitar was more or less just playing around with the gear. In the end I had 4 different recordings from a single bass line. One was recorded with t-bone bass drum mic straight from the 4×10 cabinet. Two DI signals, pre and post pre-amp, were captured. Moreover, one recorded signal was routed via Behringer’s Bass V-Amp. Well, I must say that I had very educating afternoon that Saturday. Guitars were mainly processed by Pod XT.

Thats it shortly…
