Recording ‘Through My Eyes’ demo

September 17th, 2006

We recorded our first demo 25.8.-27.8. in Loimaa. Marko Talvitie agreed to record and mix our songs. He didn’t know what he was getting his hands into…

We had planned to record two songs (Crash and Falling to Pieces) and decided to leave Sanctuary as a backup song. If there was enough time, we would record that too. Jouni, Johannes and Archie went to Loimaa on Friday evening to set up the drums and drum sounds. They managed to record drum and bass tracks to all three songs. It meant that we had two days to record the guitars and vocals and to mix and master the whole thing.

On Saturday morning I came along. I was pretty tired since I had worked the last evening (for instance, I bought a train ticket to Tampere, although I was going to Loimaa…). We started the day with recording the guitars to Crash, and it went on suprisingly easy. After the guitars it was time to sing. It wasn’t that easy. As you know by now, this was our first demo, and I had never sung in a studio. I was pretty nervous, which made singing pretty hard. But after a few takes I relaxed a bit, and the tracks were recorded merely fast.

After a well deserved lunch break we started to record guitars to Falling to Pieces. It took more time than Crash did, but there were a lot more guitars to record. Layers of layers of guitars, that’s what we were aming for. When you have something like 8 guitars playing palm muted notes all at the same time, it sounds pretty damn good! Then it was time to sing again. This song proved to be by far the hardest. Lots and lots of backing vocals, and my voice started to be tired. But with a few dirty words and a few breaks between the takes, I finally managed to get all the vocals done. After this everyone was tired, and at some point earlier, Marko decided to start smoking again… sorry about that. But still we decided to try and record Sanctuary.

Sanctuary’s guitars were layed down in no time. We had planned to leave the vocals for sunday, but I insisted on singing one demo take, just to hear how it would sound overall. After a half a bear (a warm bear, I might add) I sang the vocals with my voice all tired, but with lots of feeling. When I stepped out of the booth, all the guys were laughing and smiling. “That was it, you don’t need to sing it again!”. So only one single take, and after that we left the studio to get ready for the next day.

On Sunday we started with the backing vocals of Sanctuary, and they were recorded in no time. After that, we began to mix the whole thing. The mixing proved to be quite hard, especially when you had heard the songs so many times already. But we (well, Marko for the large part) managed to mix it, and then it was time to do the mastering. 21 hours of work with three songs recorded, mixed and mastered. And above all, we were all happy with the result. Not badly done, not at all.

After a week we mixed the demo again, but with just a few minor changes. With a little time off, you could hear the songs and the mix with much more precision. But as I said, nothing big was made, just a bit adjusting with the levels and reverbs and stuff like that.
